What is Keighley Soup?

Those who attend pay a £5 entry fee, that fee buys a bowl of soup, bread roll and a vote. Weeks prior to the event we put out for community groups, local social entrepreneurs and individuals passionate about improving the lives of others. On the night 4 applicants are invited to ‘pitch’ their ideas to the audience, who are then given an opportunity to choose who they want to vote for.

At the last SOUP we had 31 people come to support it which gave us a prize fund of £155. This was great for the first SOUP but we want to grow and encourage more people to take the giant step of being involved and more community members to come along to support the evening whilst seeing all the great things that are happening in the area. We are looking for sponsors / donations to grow the pot in between the events – the more we raise the bigger the difference we can make.

The First Keighley SOUP – the winning pitch:

Nick gave a very personal view of his life explaining due to the issues he faced growing up he has had first-hand experience of the mental health service. During this time it was apparent that although professional help was available throughout the district, peer support in the Airedale area was really lacking.

Nick puts his path to better mental wellbeing down to attending a WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) group. Nick is now a WRAP leader and although his battle with his good mental wellbeing remains he feels supported and continues to support others. He aims to start more WRAP groups up at times to suit more people, acknowledging that those who attend the current group feel supported due to not being in work, then as their wellbeing improves and life resumes that support is removed due to time constraints. More often than not those people return due to the added stress of resuming work and feeling they have to cope alone.

Nick won the total prize fund, he will not need to spend hours on monitoring, he is only accountable to those who came, paid and voted and as such is required to feedback on his achievements at a future SOUP. Nick will use the money for room hire, tea and coffee.

Nick will be joining us on the 13th October to tell us how things are going and how your money has helped. So please come along, find out all the great things that are happening in Keighley and show your support.
